216 wordsAll Latest News, Government Policy and LawJacquie Easley, currently the Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission chairwoman, today announced her bid for the city’s at-large City Council seat. Chris Coleman, who has held the seat for more than 20 years, announced in July that he wouldn’t seek reelection. Easley was a member of the Des Moines school board for 10 years beginning in 1990. She’s chairwoman of the Regional Workforce Investment Board, of which she’s been a member since 2010. She’s also diversity director at Mercy Medical Center. “I cherish my hometown and I am running to use my experience to work to bridge the gaps for our residents in infrastructure, housing and community well-being.” Easley said in a prepared release. “Our residents deserve streets free from potholes and safe routes for pedestrians. Our youth deserve a fully funded mobile mental health crisis service and training for first responders. Our families deserve opportunities to find affordable housing.” Easley is one of six people who have announced plans to run for the at-large seat in the Nov. 5 election. The others are Marlu Abarca, Marco Battaglia, Sheila Knoploh-Odole, Ethan Standard and Carl Voss. A candidate must receive a majority of votes to win the election. If no one receives a majority of votes, a runoff will be held between the top two vote-getters.
