The September/October dsm Magazine was unveiled Tuesday night at the River Center in Des Moines.

LGBTQ Legacy Leaders – As any regular reader of dsm Magazine knows, the magazine is a longtime advocate for equal opportunity for all. It recognizes that society has been slow to acknowledge the contributions of its minority groups. In one small step to correct that, dsm has partnered with the advocacy group One Iowa to honor community leaders who have made our state better for all Iowans.

Dreaming Big – Angela Walker Franklin joined Des Moines University as president in 2011, becoming the first woman and person of color to lead the institution. In the past year, DMU and Franklin have been in the news for the launch of a $25 million fundraising campaign and for the university’s plans to create a new 88-acre campus in West Des Moines. She and her husband, health care executive Thaddeus Franklin, have three adult sons and a granddaughter. In an interview, Franklin reflects on everything from dealing with self-doubt and discrimination to embracing opportunity and dreaming big.

‘Music Everywhere’ – The flurry of high-profile summer concert festivals — 80/35, the revived Jazz in July, the Warren Morrow Latin Music Festival, the new CMA Jazz Festival — may be over, but the music never ends. In fact, insists Kathyrn Dickel, “Des Moines is an every-night-of-the-week music town.” She should know: As a co-founder of City Sounds, Dickel has made it her mission to boost the visibility of Des Moines musicians and enhance the vibrancy of the local music scene.
