Hickman Road will be widened to six lanes at Northwest 128th Street, Clive officials said in a recent news release. In addition, the Iowa Department of Transportation will construct dual left turn and single right turn lanes at the intersection. The DOT and the cities of Clive and Urbandale are preparing for the design portion of the project. A construction start date has not been set. An item in this morning’s Business Record Commercial Real Estate newsletter listed an incorrect start date for the project. The DOT has allocated $500,000 for the project, which also will receive $700,000 in federal Surface Transportation Block Grant Funds. The total cost of the improvements is estimated at about $2 million with the majority of funding for the project coming from state and federal government grants. Morning and evening rush hour congestion prompted the construction. Frequently during peak morning commuting hours, eastbound traffic on Hickman can back up for a half-mile, Clive officials said in a news release. During the evening peak period, westbound traffic on Hickman often backs up onto the interstate ramps and lanes.
