The facility was to be a partnership among Mary Greeley Medical Center, Iowa State University, Des Moines Area Community College, Story County and Heartland Senior Services, the Iowa State Daily reports. It would have been built on Iowa State property. Before the election, leaders said it would be difficult for the center to move forward if voters rejected it. While city councilors unanimously supported it with a resolution, a political action committee called “Citizens of Ames for Responsible Economics” encouraged voters to cast a no vote because of higher taxes and the deficit it would have operated at.
