Mad Meatball, a popular pizzeria formerly located at Southeast Fifth Street and East Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, has a new home.

The restaurant will reopen in spring 2020 in ground-floor space at Linc at Gray’s Station, a 200-unit apartment complex under construction by Hubbell Realty Co. at 200 S.W. 11th St., just south of downtown. The $41 million apartment project is part of Hubbell’s urban neighborhood that includes single-family houses, condominiums, townhomes, apartments and commercial space.

Construction of Linc is underway, with the first phase expected to be completed by mid-2020. Linc’s ground floor includes more than 14,000 square feet of commercial space.

Mad Meatball, which closed in April, is Linc’s first signed tenant and will lease more than 3,000 square feet in the northeast corner of the building.

“We’ve been searching for a new home for Mad Meatball since making our announcement on Facebook earlier this year,” Andy Hartman, Mad Meatball’s owner, said in a news release. “We know that this prime location will give us a great connection to downtown residents and visitors as well as more space to grow.”

Skøl, a Viking-themed bar and restaurant, opened in August in Mad Meatball’s former location at 401 S.E. Fifth St. Skøl is operated by Full Court Press, which has several themed establishments in the Des Moines area, including the Iowa Taproom and Hessen Haus.
