University of Iowa lands $13 million role in national opioid fight

128 wordsAll Latest News, Education, Health and WellnessTwo grants totaling nearly $13 million through the National Institute of Health’s Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) Initiative have been granted to the University of Iowa to assist in research and treatment of chronic pain, reports the Cedar Rapids Gazette. The first HEAL grant, a four-year, $6.5 million award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, will establish a clinical coordinating center for the consortium of universities involved in the Acute to Chronic Pain Signatures Program. The second grant of $6.5 million over five years comes from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, and aims to conduct a clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of physical therapy for fibromyalgia patients with or without a transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation, or TENS, treatment.
