Women in cheesemaking? ISU now has a scholarship for that
A new scholarship at Iowa State University aims to help women launch successful careers in the dairy industry. Savencia Cheese USA has established the Dorothy Demeter – Savencia Cheese USA Undergraduate Scholarship, honoring the first woman to receive a dairy science degree from Iowa State. Demeter, who passed away in May, graduated from ISU in 1953 and helped grow her family’s cheesemaking company, which later was acquired by Savencia. In late 2017, Savencia launched Dorothy’s Cheeses, a product line inspired by her experiences, including Comeback Cow and Keep Dreaming soft-ripened cheeses. The company’s $50,000 commitment will create an endowed scholarship at Iowa State, providing support to outstanding students majoring in dairy or food science with consideration for those interested in cheesemaking.
