The Raise the Bar Initiative has announced the Ema Cardenas Scholarship Fund, named for the East High School student who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in April. Cardenas was a member of the Barbell Club, a program launched by the Raise the Bar Initiative in Des Moines public schools that teaches young women emotional and physical life skills along with strength training. “Ema always showed up with a giant smile on her face; she was an incredibly shiny star,” said Barbell Club head coach Jennifer King. “We all learned so much from her.” The scholarship fund will award $1,000 each to support two students in continuing their education beyond high school and who complete one of the Barbell Club’s six-week courses.
