$16M awarded through 3rd round of Destination Iowa grants
The state this week announced $16 million in grants for three projects through the Destination Iowa program. The program, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, allocates $100 million for projects that enhance the quality of life in Iowa communities and attract visitors and new residents. This was the third round of awards announced. The projects to receive funding:
- Dyersville was awarded $12.5 million for the This is Iowa Ballpark project to build a permanent multiuse stadium that can host professional baseball games, college tournaments and other year-round events. The award represents 25% of the total project cost of $50 million. The stadium is part of a larger $80 million project that will include nine ball fields, a hotel and event space, and an outdoor concert amphitheater.
- The city of Marion was awarded $3 million for the development of its Central Plaza into a four-season gathering space and completion of the CeMar Trail, connecting Marion to Cedar Rapids. The plaza will include performance space, an ice skating loop, fire tables and seating, interactive play sculptures and green space. The total project cost is just over $9 million.
- The Danville Railcar Project was awarded $500,000 to buy and restore a 1937 European Oppein Boxcar, which will add interpretation and education opportunities to the existing Anne Frank Pen Pal exhibit in Danville, located in Des Moines County in southeast Iowa. The award represents 88% of the total project cost of more than $566,000.
The Iowa Economic Development Authority began accepting applications for Destination Iowa in May. It will continue to review applications through Dec. 31 or until funding runs out. Funded projects must be completed by June 30, 2026.
