Legislation advances for competitive grant program to expand truck parking
The American Trucking Associations are praising U.S. House leaders for advancing legislation this week that would help address a critical shortage of cargo truck parking. The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act would authorize the creation of a competitive grant program for states to spend $755 million over a four-year period on new truck parking projects including capacity expansion and enhancements like lighting, restrooms and other security features. During the markup of the bill on Wednesday, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee passed an amendment in the nature of a substitute to H.R. 2187, which was introduced by Reps. Mike Bost, R-Ill., and Angie Craig, D-Minn., last year. “The lack of safe and accessible truck parking is an issue that causes serious concern for our industry,” ATA President and CEO Chris Spear said in a press release. The ATA’s research arm has found that on average U.S. truck drivers spend nearly an hour per day looking for parking, time that reduces their wages, adds undue delays to the supply chain and raises stress on an already-taxed workforce.
