The benefits of gender diversity in business — greater profitability, less risk, more innovation — have been known for some time and new research continues to make the case. But in terms of female advancement, we’ve barely moved the needle. Why? Part of the answer seems to be that the bulk of leadership at many companies — men — play, at best, a peripheral role, writes Elissa Sangster, executive director of Forte Foundation.

While some women claim they don’t need the help of men, Sangster disagrees. There are ways for men to get involved that don’t require shouting “sexism” in a meeting, and concrete strategies to counter apathy and indifference.
