House File 349, a bill that would reduce the length of individuals’ probationary periods when they complete education and workforce activities, passed the Iowa House on Tuesday 93-1. Under the legislation, individuals could reduce their probation terms by up to 40%. Iowans United for Opportunity, a coalition of Iowa stakeholders that worked with legislators on the bill, praised the passage. “[The] passage of House File 349 is a meaningful step toward keeping Iowans safe and creating pathways to economic opportunity for all,” said Kam Middlebrooks, Iowans United for Opportunity coalition lead and Iowa state organizer for Reform Alliance. “We are thankful for the leadership of House Judiciary Chairman Steve Holt and House Public Safety Chairman Phil Thompson in getting this legislation through the House.
