Randy Feenstra, a Republican from Hull, is calling for rural Iowans to boycott Des Moines by shopping and vacationing in other areas of the state. He’s mad about Des Moines Water Works’ federal lawsuit against three rural counties the utility blames for nitrate pollution. “Being a rural Iowa legislator, I see this snob urban-versus-rural mentality on a regular basis,” Feenstra wrote on his personal blog. “Urban cities no longer have any regard for the state’s agricultural community. I firmly believe that the power of our agricultural community needs to stand up against Des Moines.” Fellow Republican Sen. Brad Zaun of Urbandale objected to Feenstra’s comments, and the head of the Des Moines area convention bureau, Greg Edwards, said: “Agriculture plays a major role in Greater Des Moines, particularly within our economic development areas, including hosting visitors and ag-related meetings and conventions. Boycotting Des Moines would have a negative impact on our entire state’s economy.”
