State report: Most of Iowa drought-free

Iowa now is 80 percent drought-free, after rainfall picked up in the first few days of May. Rain averaged two inches below normal statewide in April. That left 25 percent of the state drier than normal two weeks ago. The normally flood-prone spring has found river levels mostly normal, including in Greater Des Moines. Northwest Iowa remains abnormally dry with some areas in moderate drought. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported that April runoff in the Missouri River basin above Sioux City was only about half of normal. Read more
