Summer camp for techies aims to address STEM shortage
Fifty-one Des Moines public school students today are beginning a four-day stint at Tech Journey Camp, an initiative that gives underprivileged students the opportunity to work with a diverse group of passionate and successful technologists. The program was co-founded by Antonio Kioko of Principal Financial Group Inc. and David Kessler of Source Allies, with the hope of addressing the need for STEM jobs, which are expected to grow by 16 percent over the next decade in Iowa. Specifically, the camp aims to help those with limited resources to take an interest in technology and focuses on students (13-16 years old) who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to access special technologies because of financial background, gender inequality and racial diversity barriers.
