Lockheed to buy Sikorsky for $9 billion

The New York Times: Lockheed Martin said today it would buy Sikorsky Aircraft, the maker of the Black Hawk helicopters favored by the United States military, from United Technologies Corp. for $9 billion in cash. The deal would further bolster Lockheed’s status as the world’s biggest military contractor, giving it another major business line in addition to its already hugely popular military equipment, including the F-35 fighter jet.

 

UCLA Health hacked, affecting 4.5 million people

CNNMoney: Hackers broke into the massive hospital network of the University of California, Los Angeles, accessing computers with sensitive records of 4.5 million people. According to the university, names, medical information, Social Security numbers, Medicare numbers, health plan IDs, birthdays and physical addresses were potentially stolen.

 

Spending on college soars 16 percent

CNNMoney: For the first time in five years, parents opened their wallets wider to spend more on college this past year. On average, families spent $24,164 for college in the 2014-15 academic year, according to the annual “How America Pays for College” report from Sallie Mae. That’s a 16 percent increase from the previous year. As expected, the rising cost of college was a factor. But also at play was parents’ higher degree of confidence in the economy and their financial health.
