Townsend says selling estate ‘cost me a fortune’

After first listing his 9,500-square-foot Urbandale home for sale for $4.9 million in 2013, Ted Townsend sold it at auction recently for the reserve price of $1 million.

Townsend said the buyer was Urbandale pediatric dentist and orthodontist Thomas Wilson, but you won’t find his name on a $1.1 million deed that was signed July 31 and recorded Aug. 10. According to that land record, the buyer was WHC LLC.

Wilson was the sole bidder at an auction June 27, Townsend said. The process was a disappointment for the prominent philanthropist and founder of the former Great Ape Trust.

“I’m not mad at anybody, but it cost me a fortune. I don’t know what happened,” he said.
