U.S. News ranks Grinnell College No. 19
U.S. News & World Report’s latest annual rankings of colleges and universities, released this week, included mentions of a number of Iowa schools.
Perhaps most noteworthy was Grinnell College, which ranked 19th among national liberal arts colleges. The school has fluctuated between 22nd and 17th in the magazine’s rankings since 2010. Luther College ranked 90th, Cornell College 93rd, Coe College 116th, Central College 136th, and Simpson College and Wartburg College tied for 143rd in the same category.
Among national universities, the University of Iowa ranked 82nd and Iowa State University 108th.
The magazine also ranked regional schools. In the Midwest, Drake University ranked third among regional universities, University of Northern Iowa 18th, St. Ambrose University 36th, Graceland University 104th and University of Dubuque 108th.
Among Midwest colleges, Northwestern College was fifth, Dordt College seventh, Buena Vista University 11th, Loras College 13th, Clarke University 14th, Mount Mercy University 22nd, Morningside College 24th, Briar Cliff University 38th and Iowa Wesleyan College 69th.
The top national universities were Princeton, Harvard and Yale. The top national liberal arts colleges were Williams, Amherst and Swarthmore. The top regional universities in the Midwest were Creighton, Butler and Drake. The top Midwestern colleges were Taylor University, Augustana University and Ohio Northern University.
The schools are ranked based on their mission and 16 indicators of academic performance, and, in some categories, feedback from peer schools. The indicators include the retention of students, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and graduation rate. Read more
