Insurance commissioner reaches settlements on deceptive health plans

Iowa Insurance Commissioner Nick Gerhart announced Friday that he has reached settlements with three Florida men and three related companies for deceptive representations about health insurance plans being sold in Iowa. The insurance plans sold by the call center representatives were actually fixed indemnity insurance policies that would only pay a limited benefit toward medical services. For some medical services this benefit was no more than $50, leaving nearly all of the financial risk with the consumer. The settlements require the parties to pay $35,000 toward consumer restitution and $17,500 to the state’s insurance Enforcement Fund. The commissioner has either revoked their producer licenses or prohibited them from doing business in Iowa under a cease and desist order.
