The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority staff has recommended that the DART commission on Tuesday terminate the agency’s $3.6 million contract with a company hired to install new fareboxes on buses. The company, LECIP, Inc., has failed to meet the contract requirements, and DART sent a breach of contract notice on July 30, DART said. A meeting last week failed to provide proof the contract terms would be met. DART is attempting to add a new system that would take smart cards and cash. The smart cards could be tapped on a reader as the rider boarded. The system would allow the user to recharge the card online. DART spokeswoman Amanda Wanke said the staff still hopes to find a company that can replace the two-decade-old system now in place with a more modern version, but details are still pending the commission vote and further analysis. Read more
