Startup job creation lagging since recession

Startup companies, according to the data, have been robust job creators in the past. However, 2013 numbers reflect a net addition of 2.3 million new startup jobs, down from the peak of 3.5 million jobs in 2006.
Companies that have been in business at least 26 years accounted for net new job creation of 1 million in 2013, reaching their pre-recession levels, according to the Census Bureau.
In Iowa, startups accounted for between 1.2 and 1.5 percent of total employment in 2013.
