Airport officials said 21 of Des Moines passengers’ top 25 destinations are served by Southwest from St. Louis. Several companies with Des Moines area operations, including Monsanto Co., have strong ties to St. Louis.
Southwest will end service to Chicago Midway International Airport from Des Moines when service to St. Louis begins. “We will continue to work with Southwest Airlines as they optimize their route structure,” said Kevin Foley, the airport’s executive director and general manager.
Foley in recent weeks has said the Des Moines airport’s growth is hampered by a lack of new flights and a loss of seats on some current routes. Passenger traffic growth is low this year after several years of record gains, and the airport is counting on annual growth of 3 percent to support a proposed $420 million new terminal and associated facilities.
Southwest’s entry into the Des Moines market helped spur competition, airport officials have said.
