Des Moines teacher receives community leadership award from Iowa Campus Compact
Iowa Campus Compact recently recognized education leaders, students and alumni for their work in building community-campus partnerships and community service programs. Among the honorees was Carrie Romo, a 2006 alumna of Central College who is now a Des Moines middle school Spanish teacher. Romo received the Community Leadership award during the annual Engaged Campus Awards and Summit held May 9 at Coe College. While a student at Central College, Romo mentored first-year students and facilitated discussions about diversity and also volunteered weekly at an elementary school where she taught Spanish to elementary students. Romo continues to provide community leadership in Des Moines as program coordinator forDream to Teach, an initiative to increase representation of educators of color in the school district. She also serves on the board of the Privilege Institute, a social justice nonprofit. To see a list of all award winners, click here.
