Gov. Terry Branstad said Thursday he would consider an increase in the state minimum wage if such a bill lands on his desk this legislative session, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported. Branstad said that a number of states recently have increased their minimum wages, and that he signed the bill in 1989 that created Iowa’s minimum wage then at $3.35 per hour. “I’m willing to consider it,” Branstad said, noting his support would be contingent on the amount. The National Federation of Independent Business today released a statement expressing disappointment with Branstad’s position. “The last thing that Iowa small businesses need to contend with is yet another government mandate increasing the cost to do business,” NFIB State Director Kristin Failor said.
