341 wordsAll Latest News, Arts and CultureCentral Iowans set a record level of support for United Way of Central Iowa, pledging $28,611,775 during the 2015 campaign. The total surpassed the $28.5 million goal set in early 2015 by campaign chair Jim Israel and the volunteer campaign leaders.
Israel, retired CEO of John Deere Financial, announced the campaign results at a Thursday evening gathering of campaign volunteers and community leaders.
“This great result happens thanks to the generosity of the Central Iowa community and the hard work of hundreds of volunteers, employee campaign leadership within 600 companies, loaned executives and United Way staff,” Israel said. “I look forward to the next step — truly an important one — of the investment of these dollars into strategies and actions that will improve our community. It will pay dividends for generations to come.”
United Way President Mary Sellers said the 2015 campaign will provide resources for the organization’s work as the community continues to make progress toward its Goals for 2020 in education, income and health.
Five companies raised $1 million or more in their 2015 United Way workplace campaigns.
Principal Financial Group Inc. and its employees gave over $5 million. Wells Fargo & Co. and its employees raised more than $3 million, and Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. and DuPont Pioneer and their employees both raised more than $1 million. Deere & Co. and its employees at Des Moines Works and Financial and Intelligent Solutions Group together raised more than $1 million.
Thirteen of the top 100 workplace campaigns posted double-digit campaign increases, including FBL Financial Group Inc., whose employees and corporate match surpassed $775,600, a 16 percent increase over 2014.
In addition, United Way secured $703,700 in grant funding in 2015 to advance community priorities in education, income and health.
Thursday’s event also marked the kickoff to United Way’s 100th year in Central Iowa. The 2016 campaign — the 100th United Way campaign in Central Iowa — will be co-chaired by Suku Radia, CEO of Bankers Trust Co., and Nora Everett, president of retirement and investor services for Principal.
