Women rising in Iowa law enforcement ranks
The Des Moines Register: In the past 20 years, the number of women in law enforcement in Iowa has grown slightly, according to a Des Moines Register sampling of departments’ demographic data. The 23 departments that provided data indicated that in 2000, they had 164 sworn female officers. Today they have 201, the Register reports. Nationally, departments employed 58,000 female police officers in 2013, more than double the number in 1987, according to data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics. In addition, 3 percent of police chiefs in 2013 were women.
