Federal safety regulators are proposing that heavy-duty vehicles be equipped with speed-limiting devices set to a specific maximum speed, Trucking Info reportedA notice of proposed rulemaking was issued jointly today by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. For a decade, trucking and safety advocates have pushed for such a requirement on trucks and other commercial vehicles. The proposed standard would require that each new “multipurpose” vehicle over 26,000 pounds be equipped with a speed limiting device. Carriers operating regulated trucks in interstate commerce would be required to maintain the speed limiting devices for the service life of the vehicle. No speed limit has been proposed yet for the proposed limiters. The DOT will seek public comment on the proposed rule for 60 days after it is published in the Federal Register, which is likely to occur during the week of Aug. 29.
