Last week, approximately 60 customers in the Des Moines area – most of them small businesses – reported receiving a call from a scammer who claims to work for MidAmerican Energy and threatens to disconnect service in exchange for payment. In almost all cases, the scammer requested that the caller pay with a pre-paid debit card, often referred to as a Green Dot card, and provided the call-back number of 844-282-0416. This is not a MidAmerican Energy number. The utility recently launched its Slam the Scam campaign, which advises customers receiving such calls to notify the company at 888-427-5632 as well as their local police department.
