158 wordsAll Latest News, Real Estate and DevelopmentThe first swimmers will hit the 50-meter pool at the YMCA of Greater Des Moines in January 2018. The nonprofit reported today that it had used a bridge loan and late donations to collect the remaining money for the long-awaited $10 million pool, the last piece of the original construction. The Y opened in January 2015 in the former Polk County Convention Center building in a project that involved an unusual land swap downtown. The pool construction was halted by a shortage of funds.
There was no word on who provided the final donations, though several speakers praised businessmen Bill Knapp and Jim Cownie for their work on fundraising. Knapp was singled out for particular praise, even by Cownie.
YMCA CEO Dave Schwartz said pool construction should begin within a month. He declined to name the contractors because final contracts aren’t signed.
Schwartz and others said the YMCA plans to continue fundraising to shore up its overall finances.
