STOCK WATCH: Falling Iowa stock prices outnumber gainers in September
Temperatures and leaves may not have fallen much in Iowa in September, but some Iowa stock prices did.
Iowa stocks with declining share prices outnumbered gainers in September, with 22 companies ending the month with lower stock prices than the previous month. By comparison, 14 of the 36 companies tracked by the Business Record had positive changes in their stock prices for the month.
The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 23 Iowa-based public companies, was down 2.4 percent for the month. The Dow Jones industrial index was also down, by a half-percent, but the Nasdaq gained nearly 1.9 percent in September.
Among Iowa stocks whose share prices declined by the greatest percentage last month were HNI Corp., down 28.7 percent; Wells Fargo & Co., down 12.8 percent; and Casey’s General Stores Inc., down 8.5 percent.
NewLink Genetics Corp.’s share price increased 47.5 percent in September. Other companies with double-digit increases in share price were Lee Enterprises at 34.4 percent and Windstream Holdings, up 18.1 percent from August.
