Chicago couple funds career-focused program at Grinnell College
Grinnell College has created a Business and Finance Community to help students and recent alumni discover how their liberal arts education can propel them into successful business careers, the college announced. The innovative community is made possible by a $450,000 gift from Penny Bender Sebring, a 1964 Grinnell graduate and life trustee, and her husband, Charles Ashby Lewis. Sebring, a trustee since 1993 and a life trustee since 2005, is senior research associate at the University of Chicago and co-founder of the UChicago Consortium on School Research at the Urban Education Institute. Lewis, retired chairman of investment banking at Merrill Lynch and Co., is managing general partner of Coach House Capital. They also have donated $900,000 to launch and develop Grinnell’s successful Education Professions (Ed Pros) Community, bringing their total investment to $1.35 million. The Business and Finance Community will build on the success of the Ed Pros Community, which doubled student membership in its first three years. The new business community will help participants build networks and begin careers in finance, marketing, human resources and related areas.
