Report: Iowa consumers could save $12.6 billion in 25 years by using wind energy
A coalition of wind energy advocates today released a report that contends Iowa consumers could save $12.6 billion over the next 25 years if the state doubles its wind power.
Doubling the 10,000 megawatts already online or planned would mean the average household would save $3,200 on its electric bills, and average industrial customers would save $825,000 over the 25 years. The savings come from free fuel and lower operating expenses.
The cost of purchasing wind energy has fallen 60 percent in five years as a result of technological advances, according to the report by A Renewable America Wind Energy Foundation and the American Wind Energy Association.
Iowa’s annual savings from adding that much wind power would be $476 million.
Wind already accounts for more than 30 percent of Iowa’s electricity generation.
