Iowa State University sociologist David Peters has found that income levels in rural Iowa are higher than in the urban centers, a discovery that goes against conventional wisdom, Iowa Public Radio reportedThe median household income in rural areas of Iowa is a bit more than $60,000, 11 percent higher than in cities, Peters said. He said one reason may be that three-quarters of Iowa farms are so-called “hobby farms.”
