Megabus.com to end service in Des Moines, rest of Iowa Jan. 9

Megabus.com, the discount bus line that arrived in Des Moines 2010 to great hoopla and fares as low as $1, will end its runs through Iowa after trips are completed Jan. 9, spokesman Sean Hughes confirmed.

Megabus.com last week announced layoffs and cuts in Chicago service, along with increased service in Ohio and Wisconsin. Those changes include the cancellation of the Omaha-Chicago runs that include stops in Des Moines, Iowa City-Coralville and Davenport. Hughes said the company has no employees in Iowa.

The company cited years of low gas prices, which have led many passengers to drive their own vehicles or book a flight.

“It’s always disappointing to lose different choices on transportation, especially for those who rely on it rather than have it as a choice,” said Todd Ashby, executive director of the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. “This was a fairly reliable and economical way for people to get to Omaha and Chicago.”

“Most resilient places have more choices,” he added.

Megabus.com began service in Des Moines in mid-2010. In the first year, ridership from Des Moines to Chicago was 86,000. Service to Davenport and Omaha was added later. The company didn’t answer an inquiry on current ridership.

The company’s buses have been known for Wi-Fi service, power outlets and relatively cheap fares. However, the firm has struggled with delayed trips and mechanical difficulties at times.

The impending loss of service leaves a void in discount service. At the Greater Des Moines Partnership, bus service is seen as one piece of a larger transportation picture.

“We support opportunities for various modes of transportation for our region,” said Partnership CEO Jay Byers. “The Partnership believes that investing in a complete, multimodal transportation system and infrastructure is a core function to moving people, creating jobs and spurring economic growth. We will continue to support safe, reliable transportation options.”

Other bus lines offer Des Moines-to-Chicago services through a depot on Second Avenue.
