The Iowa Utilities Board on Tuesday issued an order that sets the conditions for MidAmerican Energy Co.’s next planned phase of wind energy development in Iowa. The order establishes an 11.5 percent rate of return on equity for MidAmerican’s proposed Wind IX electric generation project, which would add up to 162 megawatts of wind generation capacity. The order also sets an overall cost cap of $1.5 million per megawatt for the project. Additionally, once 50 MW of the project are in operation, MidAmerican would be required to pay an additional $2 million annually to customers through an energy adjustment clause until the next rate case proceeding is decided by the board. The board said in a release that “customers stand to benefit from the wind project, which would provide an additional renewable source of electricity to meet demand in Iowa, and has found that it would be a reasonable long-term source of electricity.”
