Rockwell Collins Inc. on Friday celebrated the expansion of the company’s production facility in Sydney, Australia, where it will manufacture its Distributed Aperture System optical systems for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II jet fighter. The Cedar Rapids-based manufacturer last year signed a long-term agreement with Northrup Grumman Corp. to produce the optical assemblies in Australia. The DAS is a multifunction infrared system that enables F-35 pilots to simultaneously detect and track aircraft and missiles in every direction, as well as providing visual imagery for day or night navigation. Imagery projected onto the pilot’s helmet-mounted display provides the capability to, in effect, look virtually at terrain and the rest of the outside world, through the floor and wings of the aircraft.
