State tries to collect unpaid court fees
Efforts to collect unpaid fines and court fees should increase revenue for state and local governments, the Iowa Judicial Branch said today.
The Kansas City, Mo., office of Texas-based law firm Linebarger, Goggan, Blair & Sampson LLP has been contracted by the judicial branch to collect court fines and fees that have been unpaid for more than a year.
The firm is authorized by state law to add 25 percent to the amount owed. In fiscal year 2011, the judicial branch collected about $163 million in fines and fees.
