The Iowa Supreme Court has rejected a Florida utility company’s appeal of an Iowa Utilities Board ruling that opened the door for the creation 1,001 megawatts of wind power by MidAmerican Energy Co. In 2009, the Des Moines-based company filed a request for advance ratemaking principles for the project, arguing in part that market demand would eliminate the need for future rate increases. NextEra Energy Resources LLC, the largest wholesale supplier of wind power in North America, objected, saying MidAmerican was trying to corner the wholesale market. MidAmerican is a regulated utility and is required to supply power to the retail market. It sells surplus energy on the wholesale market. The Iowa Utilities Board held that MidAmerican’s request should be granted. After NextEra appealed, the board ruling was upheld in district court. The Iowa Supreme Court affirmed the district court’s ruling. In 2011, MidAmerican completed projects that generate 593.4 megawatts of wind power and expect to complete the project by the end of this year, bringing an additional 407.1 megawatts online.
