Michael Gartner, Steve Rasmussen and John Ruan III will be inducted in the Iowa Business Hall of Fame next month.

Gartner, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and majority owner of the Iowa Cubs, Rasmussen, CEO of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. , and Ruan, chairman of Ruan Transportation Management Systems Inc., will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a black-tie dinner on Thursday, Dec. 6, at The Meadows Events and Conference Center in Altoona.

Gartner, a former editor of The Des Moines Register, several other U.S. newspapers and former president of NBC News, chaired the Iowa Vision Board, which made grants for the Iowa Events Center, the Science Center of Iowa, the downtown library, and the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates in Des Moines.

Rasmussen, a Webster City native, was instrumental in expanding Nationwide and Allied Insurance’s presence in Des Moines and he helped lead efforts to develop the Western Gateway in downtown Des Moines. He has been a leader of several civic boards, here and in Ohio, where Nationwide has its home office.

Ruan leads the Ruan family trucking business, which was started by his father 80 years ago and now is one of the top 10 privately owned transportation businesses in the country. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated leadership in advocacy and philanthropy. He and his wife, Janis, have been honored for their contributions to arts, culture and civic projects in Des Moines.

The Business Record’s Nov. 21 e-newsletter inaccurately listed John Ruan II as the recipient of this award.

The Hall of Fame honors Iowans who have made outstanding contributions to develop and enhance Iowa’s business climate. They are selected by the Greater Des Moines Committee, a group of 129 business leaders. The committee, which began in 1902, has been nominating people to the Hall of Fame since 1975.
