The New York Times spent 10 months investigating incentives awarded to businesses by hundreds of cities, counties and states.

Because there is no nationwide database of these incentives, the Times put together an interactive database and found that local governments give up $80.4 billion in incentives each year.

Iowa spent at least $223 million per year on incentive programs.
