With Trinity Structural Towers Inc. planning to build a wind turbine production facility at the former Maytag plant in Newton, changes for the city are already under way. A road that runs through the existing facility will be relocated.

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) Iowa Transportation Commission last week approved a Revitalize Iowa’s Sound Economy Immediate Opportunity grant application of up to $630,000 to assist with the construction and relocation of East Eighth Street North, south of North 19th Avenue East in Newton.

The existing street will become internal road for the development, allowing Trinity Structural Towers’ cranes space to move manufactured components from the facility across the original East Eighth Street North to the storage yard.

Stuart Anderson, director of IDOT’s office of systems planning, said he believes the street will use the same name.

Relocating 2,150 feet of East Eighth Street North will cost more than $1.045 million, but the new Trinity Structural Towers new facility will create 140 new jobs and more than $21.4 million in associated capital investment.
