Iowa Health – Des Moines has announced that the new hospital being built in West Des Moines will not be named after Michael R. Myers. The Myers’ family was released from a $15 million pledge toward the construction of a new hospital in West Des Moines.
The Ducks will have plenty of airtime traveling back and forth from California to Iowa this season, literally. Schlegel Sports, owner of Iowa’s American Hockey League (AHL) team, announced Tuesday the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League (NHL) will bring their AHL affiliate to Des Moines starting with the 2008-09 season. The AHL team was formerly named the Iowa Stars, after their former parent club, the Dallas Stars. The new team name and colors will be announced at a future date during the summer. However, the new team name will not be reflective of an affiliation with an NHL team, as affiliations may change over time.
Alliant Energy Corp. plans to spend approximately $817 million to purchase 303 wind turbines from Vestas-American Wind Technology Inc. The turbines will have a total installed capacity of 500 megawatts and will be delivered in three groups to locations in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
United Airlines has announced that it will reduce its fleet by 100 planes by 2009 and will cut 1,400 to 1,600 jobs to stave off losses related to increased fuel costs. The job cuts include 500 previously announced reductions, which will happen by year’s end, United said. The airline said it was reducing its domestic capacity in the fourth quarter by 14 percent year-over-year. This means that during the 2008-2009 period, capacity would be reduced by 17 or 18 percent.
