The Des Moines International Airport (DSM) launched its inaugural Continental Airlines flight to Cleveland, Ohio June 12 and will sadly say goodbye to that same exact flight as it departs one last time on Sept. 13. The cancellation of the flight was due in part to Continental Airlines’ 15 percent reduction in services, said Roy Criss, DSM’s air service manager. Luckily, Des Moines only had one flight to cut, whereas some airports across the nation experienced much greater cuts as a result of the reductions.

“We shouldn’t see great reductions here because there’s not much left to give,” Criss said. “It’s the other, larger airports that are hurting.”

Criss said that until February of 2008, airlines didn’t have to deal with oil above $88 a barrel and now they don’t know what to do. “If anyone cuts much more, they are going to be losing profit,” he said.

Criss said he remains optimistic about the future of flights at DSM compared to other large, regional airports, but with airline cuts occurring so quickly, it’s hard to tell what lies ahead.
