Credit Union Service Network (CUSN), a nationwide credit union network, has added two additional Iowa credit unions – Midland Credit Union in Urbandale and Tradesmen Community Credit Union in Des Moines – to its shared branching locations. Through shared branching, participating credit unions can perform basic transactions for any credit union member whose institution belongs to the nationwide network, which now includes more than 3,300 locations.

Iowa credit unions have been eligible to join the network since May 2007, when the Iowa Credit Union League entered into an agreement with CUSN, which is based in Arvada, Colo. Six other Greater Des Moines credit unions have already enrolled in the network.

Midland Credit Union, based in Urbandale, joined CUSN to provide more convenient locations for its customers without having to build more branches, said Holly Bernal, the credit union’s chief operation officer. The credit union serves employees of MidAmerican Energy Co. and Dahl’s Foods. Tradesmen Community CU serves employees of labor and construction unions, and anyone living or working in Polk, Story, Boone, Dallas, Madison, Warren, Marion and Jasper counties.

“This is the wave of the future, and (credit unions) shouldn’t miss the boat,” Bernal said. “As we continue to educate more and more members, it will continue to be a successful and cost-effective offering.”

Credit unions that are part of the shared branching network incur a transaction fee for each deposit or withdrawal made by one of their members at an outside credit union. The network shares a portion of each fee it receives with the credit unions conducting the transactions.
