Arthur Coppola, chairman and CEO of Macerich Co., which owns Southridge Mall, sold $6.6 million in his company’s stock last Friday. He sold 100,000 shares at an average price of $65.54 per share, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. On Aug. 20, Coppola bought nearly 300,000 shares at an option price of $23.38 per share, at a total cost of $6.9 million; the same day, he sold the same number of shares at an average price of $57.08 per share, for a total of $16.9 million.

Two more General Growth Properties Inc. executives have sold shares to cover margin loans, Reuters reported. Alexander Berman, senior vice president of GGP International, sold 15,000 shares at $16.50 apiece on Sept. 22 and Edmund Hoyt, chief accounting officer, sold 80,000 shares on Sept. 22, 23 and 24 at average prices ranging from $16.14 to $17.20, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Six other directors have done the same thing in less than a week. On Monday, the company, which manages Jordan Creek Town Center, said it would review new strategies, including the sale of properties, to raise capital to meet its looming debt obligations. On Tuesday, General Growth shares were added to the SEC New York Stock Exchange short sale prohibition list.

The “Work Green, Work Local: Keep Iowa’s Jobs” event is this Saturday. A rally will take place on the west steps of the Capitol from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a discussion at Mars Café, 2318 University Ave., Des Moines, from 1 to 3 p.m. with Mayor Frank Cownie. The event is part of a national day of action, with more than 500 events happening across the United States asking leaders for green jobs.

Cedar Rapids-based Rockwell Collins Inc. has received a $6.9 million contract from the U.S. Navy for work on its Tactical Networking Radio system, the Associated Press reported. The work is expected to be completed by February 2010.

Sen. Tom Harkin has secured $95 million in funding for Iowa in fiscal year 2009 through Department of Defense Military Construction and Homeland Security Appropriations bills. Three funding bills will be combined with a continuing funding measure that will be acted on in the House of Representatives and Senate this week. Projects include $5 million to support the Midwest Counterdrug Training Center at Camp Dodge, $1.6 million for the Virtual Realty Applications Center at Iowa State University, $6.4 million for the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation at Iowa State and $1.6 million for Ames-based BioForce Nanosciences Holdings Inc. to produce a “ViriChip System” to rapidly detect and identify pathogens.

The Blank Park Zoo Foundation has received a $500,000 donation from Helen and James Hubbell Jr. for the $40 million campaign to expand and renovate the zoo. The Hubbells will be recognized as part of the Blank Park Zoo Uptown Hoedown gala Saturday night. For more information, go to www.blankparkzoo.com.
