The Cash for Clunkers government-funded rebate program comes to an end at 7 p.m. tonight.

Some dealerships, according to CNNMoney.com, said they would participate in the program up until the deadline to file claims on the deals at 7 p.m.

Others, including Charles Gabus Ford in Des Moines, said they weren’t going to risk selling cars through the program Monday. Gabus General Manager Jim Bintner said the dealership stopped the program Saturday night after close of business.

“We’re not doing any more,” he said. “I just don’t want to fight the computer or run the risk today.”

The National Automobile Dealers Association is calling for the government to accept rebate requests until Aug. 31 out of concern that computer problems could inhibit dealers from finishing requests because of “overwhelming demand” on Monday.

“I don’t think it will be an issue,” Bintner said of the computer system. “But I just don’t want to take that chance.”

The program requires dealers to provide paperwork to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in order to get the rebates.

According to CNNMoney.com, the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association, , said only about 3 percent of the deals that had been done in the state had been reimbursed, and that 25 percent of its dealerships had dropped out of the program because of the uncertainty of getting reimbursed.

The government hasn’t decided if an extension will be granted.
