The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) is launching a new safety initiative for its downtown Des Moines operations, aimed at improving turning procedures. A program called 5-S.T.E.P.S. (Safe Turns Ensure Pedestrian Safety) was used to train bus operators, and will be tested for two to four weeks beginning Oct. 12. The program calls for maintaining a maximum 5 miles per hour speed throughout any turn and coming to a complete stop in the middle of the turning movement before the bus crosses the second crosswalk. DART will also eliminate two of the nearly 24 safety detours it implemented on routes two months ago when it eliminated all downtown left-hand turns. After the test, DART will get feedback and determine if other safety detours can be discontinued.
