The Greater Des Moines Partnership will honor five companies with the 2009 Economic Impact Awards and nine local companies for their business practices with the 2009 Celebrate Business! Awards at a luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the Hotel Fort Des Moines, 1000 Walnut St., Des Moines. The Economic Impact Awards will go to Aviva USA, Iowa Health-Des Moines, Linweld Inc., Mercy Medical Center and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The Celebrate Business! Awards winners are Metro Waste Authority, Golden Openings Inc., Bankers Trust Co., Ryan Companies U.S. Inc., Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co., Performance Marketing Inc., CDS Global Inc., Bridgestone Firestone and CK International.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. reported third-quarter net income of $409 million, or 45 cents a share, in its earnings report released today. That’s up from $367 million, or 40 cents per share, for the third quarter of 2008. See the full release.

The president and CEO of Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines has been tapped as the fall 2009 speaker for the Robert Stafford Lecture Series on Banking at Iowa State University’s College of Business. Richard Swanson will address the housing sector and the implications of changes in the system of housing finance for financial markets, community banks and homeowners. The lecture is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Oct. 27 and will be held in Room 0119 of the Gerdin Business Building on Iowa State’s campus. The lecture series was established by the college in 2004. A reception at 10 a.m. in Room 2200 of the Gerdin Building will precede the talk.

Flexsteel Industries Inc. today reported for its first fiscal quarter, which ended Sept. 30, net income of $1.4 million, or 21 cents per share. Those numbers are up from a net loss of $749,000, or 11 cents per share, for the first quarter one year ago. See the full release.

The Warren County Philanthropic Partnership will receive a $129,013 state award to advance community-based philanthropy throughout Warren County, the foundation announced Tuesday. The award comes on behalf of the County Endowment fund, which was established by House File 2302 in the 2004 legislative session. The purpose of the legislation is to provide financial support to encourage the creation and development of community foundations and civic philanthropy in Iowa.

U.S. Bancorp reported third-quarter net income for common shareholders of $603 million, or 30 cents per share, in its earnings report released today. That compares with $576 million, or 32 cents per share, for the third quarter last year. See the full release.
