Southwest has best customer service; Continental hurt after merger

Southwest Airlines Co. has the best customer satisfaction among airlines, Crain’s reported. An annual survey by the American Customer Satisfaction Index showed that Southwest came in with a score of 81 out of 100.

Second-place Continental Airlines dropped to 64 from 71 after merging with United Airlines, which finished fourth out of the six airlines in the index. Mergers typically have been detrimental to customer service, according to the index.

Delta Air Lines Inc., for example, fell to last from third place after acquiring Northwest Airlines Corp. in 2008, and remains there.
