Des Moines rent expensive for Iowa, but below national average

Greater Des Moines is the second-most expensive metropolitan or micropolitan  statistical area in Iowa for renters, according to U.S. Census Bureau data compiled by Bizjournals.com.

The median monthly rent contract in Greater Des Moines in 2009 was $619, higher than Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Sioux City, Davenport and Cedar Rapids, but lower than Iowa City. Des Moines ranked No. 219 least expensive out of the 385 markets for which statistics were kept, and was below the nationwide median of $842. San Jose, Calif., is the most expensive market, with a median monthly cost of $1,340.
